I clearly understand why they have those rules and I realized that it was our fault for the mixup
My wife and I decided to go to a wedding and we left the kids at home alone for the first time. Our daughter is 17 years old and our son is fifteen. Both of the kids are old enough to be alone and they can both be trusted. We have been gone all day several times, but this was the first time that we actually left for the entire weekend. Last time we went out of town for the weekend, my mom came to sit with the kids on Saturday and Sunday. She didn’t really babysit, but she was there in case of an emergency. My wife and I were a little nervous about leaving the kids alone, but we had to give them some independence. Everything was going great until the kids called Saturday. My wife forgot that she scheduled an appointment to have the HVAC unit serviced. She always handles all of the service appointments on our house and our cars. She totally forgot to write the HVAC tune-up on the calendar. When we made our weekend plans, the calendar was free and clear. The HVAC technician could not perform the tune-up since there was no adult in the house. I clearly understand why they have those rules and I realized that it was our fault for the mixup. Thankfully, they were happy to reschedule the appointment for a different day. The rest of the weeknd was completely free of problems and the kids followed all of the rules and didn’t get into any trouble. I’m so proud and happy that we can trust our kids.
