How did people keep cool in the old days?

I was thinking about some of the vintage air conditioning systems that used to exist way back in the day.

I’m not talking about the really old antique commercial central air conditioning systems.

I’m not even talking about really old window air conditioning units. I’m talking about way before any of those things when primitive peoples had to rely on far more primitive means of staying cool in their own homes. One particular method that interested me involved putting dry ice in a bathtub and running either cool or lukewarm water over the dry ice. This would produce a cooling effect that would cool the immediate room or surrounding area in the home. Now that sounds like a pretty cool concept, but I don’t think it would be nearly as cool as simply using an air conditioner. In fact, I can’t imagine ever having to settle for something so woefully inadequate at keeping oneself cool in the summertime! I am one of those people that simply need central air conditioning. And if I can’t have central air conditioning, then at the least, I must have a window air conditioner unit to keep me cool. I don’t think I would have survived back in the day when people actually needed to rely on the dry ice in the bathtub method. Now, when it comes to taking refuge from the cold, I suppose something like a fireplace would be old-timey, but maybe a little fun to use to stay warm. Still, when it comes to keeping cool, there can be no substitute for air conditioners in my book!
