When I went to college, I wanted to take up engineering. I knew that I wanted to work with HVAC systems, but I didn’t want to be an HVAC technician. I had a dream that someday I would develop an HVAC system that would help to save the environment. Dad had been telling everyone that his son would someday take over his HVAC company, but I didn’t want that distinction. Being the son of the HVAC company owner isn’t always easy. I loved my father, and I was sure I was going to be a disappointment to him. When I told him what I was going to do after graduation, I could tell he was disappointed, but he was also proud. He asked who he was going to hand the HVAC company over to when he retired? I tried to explain that I wasn’t leaving the family business, but I had my own dreams. I still wanted to work with HVAC, but I wanted to build the HVAC systems that would save owners’ money and save the environment. My dad wasn’t quite following what I was saying until I spelled it out clearly. I told him that maybe I would become an HVAC contractor, which would change the company a little. If he still wanted me to take over the company when he retired, I may take him up on his offer. In the meantime, I was going to continue school, and get as much knowledge about HVAC equipment and how it works, so I can not just fulfill my dad’s dreams, but mine, too.
