When I introduced my boyfriend to my parents, I made them promise to never mention that he was an HVAC technician to any of the family members. For two years, mom and dad kept quiet about my boyfriend, but then we became engaged. It was like all bets were off. Mom and dad were bragging to everyone that their future son-in-law was an HVAC technician and looking to own his own company. I don’t know where that last part came from, but they were saying it. They devastated my fiance when they made that announcement. He was afraid his mom and dad would find out, and he wasn’t the one to tell them. He said he never even considered owning an HVAC company. I knew, and I tried to relax him, but it wasn’t working. When we went to our engagement party, I was waiting for my family to attack him and for everyone to be asking for his help. It surprised me when people were polite and they said not a word about HVAC. Dad told me he told them he just wanted to brag about his future son-in-law. My uncle said he already knew that. The boy didn’t act like he was very smart, let alone having the ability to be a future HVAC company owner. My fiance bridled when dad he heard my uncle had said this and took off. He thanked my parents for keeping his secret safe, but he felt it was time to let everyone know that he was an HVAC technician and someday he would work for himself.
