My sister is a certified HVAC technician

It’s not every day you come in contact with women performing in roles that are traditionally done by men.

But every time I see a woman in one of those positions, I feel empowered. For instance, I work for a construction company and the majority of our field crew are men, but there are a couple of women who work in the field as well. And it’s great to have that representation especially in industries that are typically dominated by men. So, when my sister Jen decided that she wanted to become an HVAC technician I fully supported her journey. She first became interested in becoming an HVAC technician after she attended a conference and met with a few women, who were in the HVAC business. That interaction with those women in HVAC gave Jen the confidence she needed to step into a male dominated industry. Representation is so important especially for young women who would like to pursue careers that are untraditional. And I am so glad that Jen met the women in HVAC because they jump started her very successful career in the industry. She was able to enroll in school and did an internship with a local HVAC provider. She also attended conferences so that she could network with other HVAC professionals. And happy to say that all her efforts paid off, and today, Jen is a top-ranking certified HVAC technician in the area that she lives. One of her goals as a woman in HVAC is to encourage other young women to pursue a career in the industry. After all, representation is necessary, and I am glad that Jen is using her experience to fill those gaps.
