One job leads to another

If you’ve ever lived a “gig-based life” then you know that reputation is everything.

You have to get along with the people you’re working for in order to continue getting more work.

They won’t rehire you if there are any tensions between you or questions about the quality of your work. And they also won’t recommend you to their friends and family if they aren’t satisfied. But if you do a good job and keep the relationship very friendly and smooth… you’ll have no trouble finding skilled trades work as an independent worker. That’s how I’ve wound up working my way from lowly landscaper to unofficial mechanic… all the way to unprofessional heating, cooling, and ventilation technician! I mean, don’t tell the HVAC repair shop down the road that I’m taking their indoor air quality control appointments from the wealthiest subdivision in town. But I have made quite a name for myself as the “go-to guy” when you want a cheap heating or cooling system repair or maintenance job. I’ve been changing air filters all over town. I’ve scrubbed several air duct systems. I’ve installed a few smart thermostats – or at least done my best, I’m not sure if the temperature control unit actually connected to the furnace or air conditioner, but it lit up. I even put in a brand new furnace, although I dropped it a few times on the way inside when the owners weren’t looking. So far I’ve made a nice sum of cash from my referrals in HVAC repair work… but I haven’t had any rehires.
