Myths of a gas furnace every homeowner should know

Gas furnaces are common HVAC equipment in homes. Its popularity compares to a heat pump, oil furnace, and electric furnace. However, there are numerous myths surrounding gas furnaces that every homeowner needs to know. First, a gas furnace is the right method of heating your home. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Gas isn’t necessarily the best way to warm your house. If your home doesn’t have gas supply lines, then you can’t install a gas furnace. Instead, you will have to look for an alternative home heating method with readily available fuel sources. Additionally, gas furnaces also heat up quickly to reach your thermostat’s temperature settings. This fast-heating often leaves cold spots in your home and could potentially lead to dry skin. It also produces carbon monoxide during heating which poses health risks to your family. You need to install carbon monoxide detectors to monitor CO levels in your home constantly. Heat pumps are preferred in locations that experience milder winters. Second, gas furnaces are more efficient than other heating options. In reality, electricity is more expensive than gas in areas with a sufficient supply of gas. In these areas, heating your home using a gas furnace is cost-effective. However, in states with very low temperatures, ranging between 40-60 degrees, installing a heat pump might be more energy-efficient and affordable. This ties to the other myth where it is believed heating a home using a gas furnace is cheaper than using a heat pump. In essence, it can be cheaper to heat your home using a gas furnace in colder areas, but it is more affordable to heat homes in warmer areas using a heat pump. To avoid forming a bias because of these myths, consult an HVAC professional when finding the right HVAC equipment or HVAC system for heating your home.
