How did things go so wrong, so fast?

I’m not sure how things got to this point, but I know I didn’t do it deliberately.

I am sitting in my living room in a pile of dust and ceiling tiles.

I finally admitted that I had to call the HVAC company to get some help. I thought it would be easy to track the ductwork and find out where my airflow loss was coming from. I didn’t think it had anything to do with the furnace, since I diligently changed the air filter every month. I didn’t think about the attic being a source of so much upset and pain. I was upstairs looking at the ductwork, trying to trace any kind of air coming out, or whatever I was supposed to be doing. The second I took that fateful step, I knew I was in trouble. I could hear the creak of the boards and then my foot went through the attic floor and I was dangling above the living room. I felt the entire area give loose as I felt my fall and the ultimate sudden stop when I landed on the floor in this pile of dust. I pulled my phone from my pocket and called the HVAC company and then my wife. She told me I should have called the HVAC company first and then she asked if I was all right. I told her about the mess in the living room and asked her to call a contractor. We needed more than an HVAC technician to repair what I had done. I need a ceiling in my living room.
