Our classroom has a ductless mini-split air conditioner. In fact, I am pretty sure that every classroom in the school has a ductless mini-split air conditioner. When it comes to cost, I am not sure that purchasing a ductless mini-split air conditioner was more affordable than a large HVAC unit that could cover the school, but the school obviously didn’t care. Having a ductless mini-split air conditioner in each classroom is pretty cool. This means that every teacher in our school is able to set the thermostat in their own rooms to the temperatures that they prefer. However, this also complicates things for the students. What if different teachers have different temperature preferences? That could cause a lot of problems for the students when the HVAC units are running. For instance, my math teacher loves colder temperatures a lot. During the summer, the teacher has the central air conditioner running all the time at a cold temperature. When we come in from outside, we feel so cold entering this classroom. The students usually have to wear a sweater due to the air conditioner. However, we have another older teacher who hates colder temperatures, so he hardly ever uses the air conditioner, and he turns on the heating system all the time. Students have a hard time going to different classrooms because the ductless mini-split air conditioner settings make it hard to have a consistent climate. Although this might be nice for a teacher, it isn’t for the student. One main HVAC unit with a school-wide thermostat setting would make things a lot simpler.
