Out of the mouths of babes was an expression I heard a lot when I was young.
I suppose it’s referring to the fact that some big truth can come out of new human beings.
But recently, I learned a whole lot about HVAC and indoor air quality from one of my babes. Well, I guess he really isn’t a babe anymore considering that he’s a freshman in college. But he’s home for the holidays and that’s always awesome. The first thing my sone did when he got home was tell me how much he appreciated the central air conditioning in our home. His dorm room is in an old building with a big boiler in the basement that produces radiant heating. My son was explaining to me that it’s either on or it’s off and when it’s on, it’s hot. But then he sort of surprised me with the knowledge he had when it comes to the heating and cooling equipment. I generally let the HVAC professionals take care of all of my needs when it comes to the heating and cooling inside my house. But my son gave me some new knowledge when it came to the sort of HVAC air filters I’ve been using. I use the cheapest available simply because they’re the cheapest. My son explained to me that if I switched to a HEPA filter, I’d be removing more than ninety nine percent of the contaminants suspended in the air. So I did that very thing and in just days, I could tell a difference in the indoor air. I’m pretty amazed that something so simple as adding a HEPA filter can make such a significant change. And it’s even more awesome that I’m learning stuff from my kid.
