Have you ever heard of a midlife career change?

You’ve heard of men in their forties having midlife crises, right? These stages of life are stereotypically characterized by the man finding the need to attempt to be hip and cool or perhaps buy a motorcycle or sports car.

  • Well, I didn’t have a midlife crisis yet, but I did have a mid-career crisis.

Let me explain. One day, I simply woke up and decided that I was bored with my job. My job was plumbing. The truth is, that the world will always need plumbers, but I simply did not want to be one anymore. I opted instead to pursue my childhood dreams of becoming an HVAC technician. My father was a plumber, and it was easier for me to slide into that career after high school, but now I was going after what I really wanted all along. I decided to go to HVAC technician school in the evenings. I had to go in the evenings because I was still working as a plumber during the daytime to make money. However, I knew that the moment I would graduate HVAC school, I would go and work for some HVAC business in town. I have no aspirations for starting my own HVAC business yet, because I knew that I needed to get my feet wet in the field before I would be able to attempt anything like that. However, perhaps I would be content as a mere employee instead of a manager, as that sounds like a big hassle!
