Muscle cramps caused by intense workouts

I have been having concerns with my calf muscles cramping at night.

The pain keeps me from sleeping.

When I go to bed, I can feel the muscle tightening up. I’ve found that keeping a heating pad on my calves helps. To hold the heating pads in place, I wrap and knot a pair of tights around my calves. I Googled what causes these cramps and figured that it’s a combination of high intensity exercise and not drinking sufficient water. I’ve had to make some changes in the way I workout. I exercise seven days per week for around an hour. I spent the majority of the session on high impact aerobics. I regularly jump rope or run for the whole hour. The impact is hard on my joints and muscles. I now pay more attention to a thorough warm up and extensive stretching of my muscles. I focus especially on the calf muscles. I add in lots of stretches where I hold my legs straight, flex my toes and curl my hands around my feet. Before, during and at the conclusion of the workout, I make a point to drink lots of water. At least three mornings per week, I stay away from high-intensity cardio. Instead, I target strength training. I might lift dumbbells or go through sets of push-ups, plank holds and abdominal crunches. I’ve noticed some alleviation of the cramps and pain in my calves. I’m certain it would help if I took a break from working my legs and let them rest. The muscles need the opportunity to heal. However, I am unwilling to skip my workouts.
