Pay attention to that HVAC warranty

Reading the fine print has never been a strength of mine. When I get a new toy, I want to play with it. Reading the manual gets in the way of all the fun I want to have. And yes, I’m a full grown adult man. It’s just that I still have that kid on Christmas morning sort of reaction when we add something new to our home. I was this way when we got our new HVAC equipment. After more than a year of planning and saving, when the new HVAC unit arrived, I was into all the bells and whistles not the fine print. And man, has residential HVAC ever come a long way in just 20 plus years. The HVAC technology on my new HVAC equipment was just remarkable. It came with zone controlled HVAC. That means there are five thermostats that can be customized to suit a specific zone in our home. The SEER rating on the HVAC unit is nearly triple what the old was. That means it’s nearly 3 times more efficient. Plus, we now have a smart thermostat that manages the HVAC output far more precisely than I ever could. So there was plenty of stuff to play with and I put the manual and warranty aside. Fast forward a few months and I came across something that said I needed to register our warranty with the factory within the first 60 days or it was voided. This sent me into a tailspin. And I would have kept spinning had it not been for my wife. She reads fine print. My wife registered the warranty on the new HVAC equipment the day after it was installed.
