We didn’t steal the AC, we just borrowed it

Our plan was a simple one, and one slightly illegal.

  • There was a small resort community in the foothills near the city.

It was really just a few dozen cabins in the woods around a huge lake, and rich folks liked to rent them on weekends. Last year there had been a terrible forest fire and the whole area had been closed down. Well, the fire is long gone, but the area is still sitting abandoned and unused. I thought we could sneak out there, break into an air conditioned cabin, and enjoy a long weekend at the lake without paying for it! It turns out that more cabins had been fire-damaged than I thought, and we could only find one cabin that still had an air conditioner in it. The problem was that the cabin with air conditioning didn’t have any power, so I had to find another cabin with a generator in it. Using some tools and being very careful with it, my friends helped me remove the mounting brackets from the A/C unit in the front window. We carried the air conditioner to the other cabin, so we could connect it to the power generator. It took a couple of hours to do it all, but finally we got the A/C turned on and started cooling down the house. The rest of the weekend was great, and we had a blast in the lake before returning to the cabin to huddle around the air conditioner to cool off. Then we returned the air conditioner to the original cabin before we left.
