What I learned in college.

I went to college to be an HVAC mechanic.

When I went to college I thought this would be a boring job, but it was the only degree I could afford.

I was wrong to think that working as an HVAC mechanic would be a boring degree and a bad job. In college I learned so much about how air conditioners and furnaces work, and I quickly realized I loved working on HVAC units. In college we got to do a lot of hands on assignments as that is the best way to learn about HVAC. After only two years in college, I started receiving assignments to fix real people’s HVAC units at their homes. Of course, I had a HVAC teacher who was there with me helping me and grading me on how I did, but I thought it was amazing that I actually got to do real heating and cooling repairs for a school assignment. Besides learning how to fix all kinds of HAV units, I also quickly learned how to handle upset or scared customers. I remember one assignment in particular, a single mother had a boiler that was leaking large amounts of water and she was furious that the boiler isn’t working properly. Understanding that she was a stressed mother, I spoke kindly and calmly to her and explained the problem with her boiler system. By the time we left, my HVAC instructor said I handled myself very well and gave me an A. I graduated HVAC school with all A’s, and I can honestly say that learning how to be an HVAC mechanic was the best decision of my life.
