The technician smoked around my furnace

He promised that if the gas furnace wasn’t able to be fixed, the Heating and Air Conditioning dealer would purchase a brand new unit for me

When I was growing up, my father consistently told me that when you are working around anything with fuel, you should never be smoking a cigarette, pipe, or cigar. He said it was nothing but a recipe for disaster. I remembered this until today and I still keep it in mind while working around fuel. When I am working on a car, I make sure to not let anyone smoke in the garage. I thought that everyone who worked had this mentality. You didn’t smoke around anything that was flammable, and that included Heating and Air Conditioning units. I never thought I would have an opportunity to tell a professional Heating and Air Conditioning specialist this, but it happened. I was upstairs truly working while the Heating and Air Conditioning specialist was working on our gas furnace. I thought I heard an odd noise, however I didn’t give it a whole lot of thought at first. It wasn’t until I thought I detected the faint stink of smoke, that I began to panic. I ran to the door and went into the basement. The Heating and Air Conditioning technician was stomping out some papers and he looked a bit wide-eyed. He apologized and said he had already called his Heating and Air Conditioning dealer for assistance. He had been smoking and by some freak accident, the ashes got into the gas furnace, and the wiring caught fire. He promised that if the gas furnace wasn’t able to be fixed, the Heating and Air Conditioning dealer would purchase a brand new unit for me. I was wondering if I should call our homeowners insurance, just in case they reneged on this promise. They could fight the Heating and Air Conditioning dealer for me. I figured I may as well wait for the owner of the Heating and Air Conditioning dealer to show up, and talk to me about our gas furnace.
