We got the wrong heater but it worked anyway

I still remember the space heater we used in our first rental.

My husband and I couldn’t afford much so we ended up with a converted garage in a shady part of town.

Of course, the rental had no central heating or cooling. It had a built in window air conditioning unit and we had to provide our own space heater. We went a few months without heat but started to get very cold as winter approaches so we started looking for space heaters. We ended up going down to a parts store, looking for something, and we found an industrial heater made for garages. Of course, it was really meant for garages where they work on your cars. It was not intended to be used indoors. The heater used radiant heat, was inexpensive, and claimed to heat a very large area. So we got it. As soon as we got it to our home we plugged it in and sat near the warmth. It worked great. The only problem is that the space heater worked too well. In fact, within about 30 minutes we started smelling a glue smell. When we investigated we noticed that the linoleum on the floor was loose. Apparently the space heater was melting the glue that holds the tile down. It did, however, warm up the entire converted garage. We ended up keeping the radiant heater. We just were super careful to never leave it on unattended and to not step on the tiles within a few feet of the heater when it was on so that the tiles wouldn’t move.
